Worksafe Guardian

Worksafe Guardian is an Australian lone worker safety company. Its mobile app and management portal protect at-risk employees in healthcare, government, not-for-profit and business settings, letting workers raise an alert by button, shake or missed check-in and connecting them to 24/7 professional emergency response. Codium rebuilt the API and management portal behind it, without touching the app its users already had on their phones.

The brief

A rebuild and migration behind an app that never went offline

Worksafe Guardian's platform had outgrown the legacy system it ran on, but thousands of lone workers were relying on the mobile app every shift. Codium rebuilt the API and the management portal from the ground up and conformed the new API to the existing mobile application's contract, so the app already in market kept working throughout. The existing customers, workers, devices and history were then migrated onto the new platform without interrupting the 24/7 monitoring service.

Management portal

A new web portal for the monitoring centre and client organisations: live alert monitoring, welfare timers, users, devices, escalation groups, departments and reporting.

Compatible with the app in market

The new API was built to the existing mobile app's contract, so no app update or re-enrolment was needed at launch.

Legacy migration

Customers, workers, devices, configuration and history migrated from the legacy system without interrupting monitoring.

SMS messaging

Two-way SMS to workers and escalation contacts from alerts and welfare sessions, alongside email and in-app messaging.

SAML and SCIM for enterprise

Single sign-on with SAML and automated user provisioning with SCIM, so enterprise clients on Microsoft identity platforms manage their workers from their own directory.

EV04 Bluetooth device monitoring

Paired EV04 Bluetooth devices report shake and fall detection and button presses into the platform, with device health and deactivations tracked on the dashboard.

When a worker raises an alert by button, shake, fall or missed check-in, the monitoring centre sees it immediately with the worker's profile, live GPS location on a map, the organisation's response instructions and the right emergency services contacts for their state.

Organisation management

A CRM for every client organisation and its devices

Each client organisation is managed from one place: contract and billing details, contracted versus active devices, trials and onboarding, device pricing, provisioning, escalation groups, departments and device responses.

Technology stack

How it's built

The rebuilt platform runs on a Laravel API with a Vue portal, with the API conformed to the existing mobile app's contract. It integrates an SMS gateway, SAML single sign-on and SCIM provisioning for Microsoft identity platforms, EV04 Bluetooth device telemetry and the 24/7 emergency response service. After several years of Codium hosting and running the platform, it was handed over with documentation, tooling and training, and Worksafe Guardian's own team now operates it.

Single page application

Built in Vue.js as a single page application, for a fast experience without page reloads and the flexibility to evolve as the system grows.

API-focused backend

The backend is built in Laravel and MySQL with an API-first interface, so the web and mobile apps share the same endpoints.

Continuous integration

Automated testing and deployment let us test new builds and update production quickly, so we can release as often as required.

Managed hosting

Amazon's Elastic Container Service runs each service in its own container within a cluster that scales up and down as needed.
